COST-EFFECTIVE PAVEMENT RECYCLING
Grinding and pulverizing are efficient, cost-effective techniques that allow you to recycle your existing asphalt pavement rather than hauling it away and starting from scratch. NPG Asphalt has extensive experience with both grinding and pulverizing operations for parking lots, roadways, and residential communities across the Inland Empire and Southern California.
ASPHALT GRINDING
Grinding is the process of removing a specified thickness of asphalt from the surface using specialized milling equipment. The term is commonly used for header cutting along the edges of concrete curbs, gutters, and ribbon gutters so that new paving will finish at the proper elevation—typically 3/8″ above the existing concrete.
Grinding is also used to remove surface irregularities, correct grade issues, and prepare existing pavement for an overlay. By milling the surface to the correct profile, we ensure the new asphalt layer bonds properly and achieves a smooth, uniform finish.
Common Grinding Applications
Header Cuts: Grinding along curbs, gutters, and concrete edges to establish the correct elevation for new asphalt placement.
Surface Correction: Removing bumps, high spots, and uneven areas to restore proper grade and drainage before resurfacing.
Overlay Preparation: Milling the existing surface to create a rough profile that promotes strong bonding with the new asphalt overlay.
Utility Access: Grinding around manholes, valve covers, and other utility structures to bring the surrounding pavement to the correct elevation.
ASPHALT PULVERIZING
Pulverizing takes recycling a step further. This process can turn your broken or badly cracked parking lot into a reusable aggregate base—right on site. Instead of removing and hauling away the old asphalt, our pulverizing equipment breaks down the existing pavement and mixes it into the underlying base material, creating a stable, compactable foundation for new asphalt.
The Pulverizing Process
After the existing asphalt is pulverized in place, line and grade are established and the process of fine grading begins. The new recycled base surface is then watered, rolled, and compacted to the specified density. Once the base is properly prepared, you’re ready for placement of new asphalt pavement.
Benefits of Pulverizing
Cost Savings: By recycling the existing asphalt into base material, you eliminate the cost of hauling away old pavement and importing new aggregate base. This can result in significant savings on larger projects.
Environmental Responsibility: Pulverizing keeps old asphalt out of landfills and reduces the need for new aggregate mining. It’s a sustainable approach to pavement rehabilitation.
Time Efficiency: Because the material stays on site, pulverizing is faster than traditional remove-and-replace methods. Less trucking means less disruption to your property and the surrounding community.
Strong Foundation: The pulverized material, when properly graded and compacted, creates an excellent base for new asphalt that performs as well as or better than imported aggregate in many applications.
WHICH APPROACH IS RIGHT FOR YOUR PROJECT?
The choice between grinding, pulverizing, or full removal and replacement depends on the condition of your existing pavement, the condition of the base layers, your budget, and your long-term goals. NPG’s experienced estimators will evaluate your property, assess the existing pavement structure, and recommend the most effective and economical approach.
